Symmetry, on the one hand, means that elements are placed right where you expect them to be (two images opposite each other, for instance). Balance, on the other, doesn't prescribe placement rules, but works with objects made of similar materials or with the same size.
The importance of scale

Scale must be considered, not just in terms of the objects you're going to relate to your fireplace, but also the correlation between the objects themselves.
There should be some obvious 'overlapping' in order to show that those pieces are similar, and they form a cohesive unit. Overdoing it, however, it's not going to help that much-instead of shocking height or width decreases, you should improve gradually, step by step.

Minimalistic is an association for modern, so there is no need to add an excessive, luxurious mantel in an obviously de-cluttered room.
All it will take is to put a long statue, a series of absolutely identical, small pieces (lined up, of course), or a large paintings.
Being a bit biased, we would recommend you to opt for the latest, due to its window pane effect it creates over the mantel, and which depicts modern edges perfectly.
